Due to the factors of having a favorable strategic location, world-class infrastructure and strong business capabilities, Singapore has the potential to be an ideal global logistics hub for Asia Pacific. The logistics sector is important to the nation's trading and manufacturing activities and a key service sector in the economy. Hence, it is crucial for Singapore's long term plan to survive to maintain an efficient and competitive logistics program. The Government has prepared itself by gearing up the young generation for the challenge of being a world-class logistics hub. Courses relating to logistics are being set up in the various tertiary institutions, and students are deeply encouraged to take up these courses of specialization.

In order to let the students have a chance to get in touch with the real world of Logistics, the idea of having a programme for the mutual benefit of the industry and the student body was thought of. Thereby, the idea of organizing a competition, opened to all tertiary institutions in Singapore, emerged within the committee.

As the name has suggested, Logistics Research Competition is a programme whereby students will be given a chance to do research about the Logistics industry, and compete with the other participating teams for the best prize. Questions based on problems faced in the day-to-day operations of a Logistics company are being for the Competition. In this way, the students would be able to have a taste of what real problems of the Logistics industry are like.

The Competition shall be opened to undergraduates in National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) as well as the four Polytechnics, namely Temasek Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic. The main target audience shall be students majoring in the field of Business and Engineering, as these courses are more related to the operations of a Logistics firm. Not only do a Logistics company needs a good management system to ensure the smooth flow of its operations, it also needs favorable supporting engineering capabilities.
